Day two of Outside Lands Festival featured sets from Milo Greene, James McCartney, Youth Lagoon, The Growlers, etc. and massive crowds came in to experience it. Jurassic 5‘s bombastic set included revamped classics such as “I Am Somebody” and “Concrete Schoolyard” and had folks dancing every which way. J5 did a somber but powerful “Freedom” tribute to Trayvon Martin and Oscar Grant as well as an over the top DJ breakdown from Nu-Mark and Cut Chemist that proved J5 never really left the game after all these years.

Supporting acts such as Youth Lagoon and Milo Greene were great, however, the headliners really stole the show – Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Nine Inch Nails. Whether you were in the way back or up front you could see Karen O’s smile (and her neon yellow shirt and shiny, studded pants and matching jacket) and feel the positive energy radiating from the stage in their dance-fueled set, which included songs like “Sacrilege,” “Mosquito,” and “Pin.”  The crowd really lost their shit when they slipped in mega-hit (and tear-jerker) “Maps” and ended with body flailing masterpiece “Date With the Night.” If my Jewfro slapped anyone in the face, I apologize.

Then the everlasting wait for Nine Inch Nails came, amidst the fog, drizzle of rain and potent haze of marijuana,  we all pushed our way to the front and waited, and it was SO worth it. Epic? Larger than life? Monumental? One can barely describe how it feels to be in the midst of a crowd like that, bodies moving, and basking in the glow of colored light and Trent Reznor’s voice, infiltrating your every pore, and music that sounds exactly like the recordings but amplified x1000.
