The Sonics

When most old school rockers come back to cut an album decades after their prime, their new music just doesn’t hit that same sweet spot. We saw it with the New York Dolls, we saw it with Iggy Pop, even the Stones — however, the Tacoma Washington garage-soul legends, The Sonics are back with a new album, and it actually sounds great. Defying the long time stigma of a rock ‘n’ roll reunion album, The Sonics prove that 48 years later they are still totally “Boss Hoss”. The Sonics will release their first album since 1967, titled This Is the Sonics, on March 31 via their own imprint, Revox. You can listen to their howling new single “Bad Betty” below. Watch out, it’s gonna rattle your bones!

In 1980, Sonics frontman Gerry Roslie, got together with The Invaders to cut an album under The Sonics band name and titled Sinderella. It was a fun spin, but it wasn’t fully The Sonics. The band’s forthcoming release, This Is the Sonics features all original members: Gerry Roslie, Larry Parypa, and Rob Lind. The original trio will be joined by Freddie Dennis (the Kingsmen/Liverpool Five) and Dusty Watson (Dick Dale/Agent Orange). The new Sonics album was produced by Jim Diamond (White Stripes, Dirtbombs).

To celebrate the release of This Is the Sonics, the band will embark on a North American tour that will kick off on April 2nd in Seattle. The band will be playing various shows with Mudhoney, Barrence Whitfield and The Savages. Although The Sonics just headlined The Roxy this past August, we’re sure they will be adding a Los Angeles date to their tour in celebration of their new album.
