Conways band

You know… I had a feeling that this Conway gig was gonna be a bit of an industry show. Managed by the same company that handles Katy Perry and Adam Lambert, I expected to see a packed house of ‘industry’ folk. Instead, the Echo was a bit of a ghost town, with it only getting about 1/3 full by the time Conway began their set. It was a bit of an eclectic and weird lineup.

Starting off the show was the sibling duo, J.Laser. Fronted by Jordan Lawlor of M83 fame and his brother, Jamie on drums, the duo was surprisingly great. I felt bad for them with less than 20 people in the audience, but that didn’t stop them—true professionals—they banged out their set as if they were playing a packed house.

Next up was Black Gatsby. Not sure what to expect, Black Gatsby’s DJ played 10 minutes of EDM club music before The Great Black Gatsby graced the stage. His set was filled with dance club-friendly songs that had the slowly growing crowd dancing. At one point, Black Gatsby brought up a male audience member and gave him a lap dance while performing a song. The guy looked a bit freaked out at first as Black Gatsby isn’t particularly petite, but by the end of the dance, the volunteer let go and had a good time as Gatsby grinded and rode his lap.

Finally, Conway and crew took the stage. Conway is a truly talented performer. Dressed in a weird hipster kimono type thing, she was Intense, yet obviously having fun. The band is super tight and she is a true talent. I just don’t know where she really fits in to the current music scene. She’s a bit too polished to really fit in the indie scene, yet too indie to really go mainstream. She’s definitely one to keep an eye on though, talent usually rises to the top, so it’ll be interesting to see where she goes.
