Calexico has been making music for a couple of decades. They are generally classified as indie rock although as they blend country, jazz, rock and more—you come to realize that their music spectrum is much more broader. At their show last night at the Regent Theatre they proved they are much bigger than just another “indie” band.
Calexico’s new album, Edge of the Sun is heavily inspired by Latin American influences. They sing to the moon, to the borders and to the people. Recorded in Mexico and recently released under the label Anti, Calexico’s new music ranges from catchy Cumbia, regional Mexican rhythms and even some hidden Salsa from they keys of Sergio Mendez who co-produced the album along with Joey Burns and John Convertino.
With great charm and an amazing performance, the theatre was packed with all ages fans that got to experience a true blend of global music at its finest. Special guests such as Gaby Moreno and David Garza joined along to make this night extra special. Opening band Villagers did a sweet introduction of the night warming up the crowd with darling vocals evoking some sighs from the audience, a perfect intro for Calexico.
