Lucy Dacus had the Echo completely enamored Friday night. The Richmond-based musician is definitely one to keep a solid watch on. Warmly welcomed by the crowd, her set began with her distinctly sharp and crisp vocals. I was instantly caught under her spell and carried away into the many stories she had to share that are just so well told and emotionally driven. Utterly powerful and playful, you can’t help but become a slave to Dacus’ unassuming charm.

Seeming quite comfortable on stage, Dacus was just warming up. Later joined by her band, they continued to perform rich songs from her 2016 Matador Records release No Burden, which was recorded in just one day (IMPRESSIVE). With relatable lyrics such as “I got a too short skirt, maybe I can be the cute one,” she picks at those widely relatable moments in a teen’s life. At a young and fresh 20 years of age, Lucy Dacus is a force to be reckoned with. Keep an eye on this one. And if you catch her on a bill in a city near you, do yourself a favor, buy the ticket.
