Shannon Lay has been making rounds around LA for the past two years, playing to sparsely crowded bars the cathartic songs from her debut album All This Life Goes Down, stopping hearts with her crystal clear vocals and soul-tugging strums. Incidentally, it was a similar experience that Kevin Morby had when he first saw Lay live and found himself asking her after the show to let him release her next album, Living Water–which eventually led to her being the first artist to sign to Morby’s newly launched Mare Records. Her first single off that new LP “The Moon’s Detriment” takes Lay’s euphonious trill to ethereal heights, one that barely emerges as a soft murmur but thrusts itself outward with such emotional vigor that it punctures all the ballooning introspection it inspires.

Lay will be playing a free show at the Bootleg Theatre on August 14 and will also be joining Morby on tour this fall, opening up for him at the Teragram Ballroom on September 21.
