The UK’s Horrors were in Los Angeles last week with three headlining shows at the Glass House, El Rey Theatre and Detroit Bar (Orange County). A lot of the Grimy Goods staff are huge fans of the slender, post-punk rockers and some of us even caught their live show more than once last week. The Horrors put on an excellent show. Although fans from the band’s inception were a bit disappointed that they didn’t play any tunes from their very raw punk debut, Strange House, no once can deny that the boys put on a hell of a show. Captivating in all of their sound, style and lyrical content—the Horrors impressed fans nonetheless.
Opening up for the band were the Stepkids—a very tripped out psyche band that exudes a lot of soul. At times they reminded me of the 80s soft rock my Mother used to listen to on KOST 103.5. But then the boys would kick it up a few notches and throw out the feminine falsetto in exchange for some pulsating jams of pure cymbals and guitars. The Stepkids had a lot going on in their live show and I’m not just talking about the funky visuals on the projector. These kids transcended through a variety of styles and made it work into a funky hodgepodge of sound.
