This past Thursday we went to check out the clash between Sierra Leone and Los Angeles through the rhythm of Janka Nabay and the Bubu Gang at one of our favorite venues, the Echo. Synths, electronic guitars, worldly vocals, and a fast paced high energy sound had the entire crowd of hipsters and more, dancing to the beat of West African Music.
Formerly known as Bubu, a traditional music from Sierra Leone in which Janka Nabay has been an important figure by stepping up this genre’s game through adding electronic instrumentation. It was total African psychedelia in the house! To make the night even more international, we made it just in time to see Awesome Tapes from Africa, known as DJ fresh to the L.A. global music scene doing his thing only with cassettes! So, CJ? Anyway, REALLY good stuff. To please the neighborhood crowd, or for whatever reason, we can’t forget that Secret Circuit also did a set of dub-step-electronic-hipsterish … interesting. This is what its all about — music unites all and we can’t wait to experience more crazy sweaty sounds from all over the map!
