Day three of Outside Lands was all about trying to see, do and eat as much as possible. Despite all the overlapping set times and big crowd (just as big, if not bigger than Saturday), I bounced around to try and catch at least a little bit of everything.

Foals rocked an impressive early set, starting off with a teaser instrumental, and then diving right in with their wailing guitars, playing songs like “Miami” and “My Number.”  A little crowd surfing, guitar in hand, from guitarist/singer Yannis Philippakis upped the energy and it was good to see the band not be afraid to get heavy and melodic.

Trombone Shorty & Orleans Revue had a diverse crowd of festival-goers, including the horse and dinosaur mask-clad and people on stilts, wildin’ out to their Nola style rock / funk powerhouse jams. They truly brought the funk AND the noise. The drummer, introduced as ‘The Animal’ bared a very impressive resemblance to his famed muppet counterpart, with his curly mop of hair, killed it on his solo and the sax player led us into a musical foray that ended in what can only be described as a sax-splosion. Throw in an instrumental cover of Green Day’s “Brain Stew” and you have yourselves one hell of a show.

King Tuff kept the pogo-party rollin’ with their bouncy, pop-psych-garage freak out jams including songs like, “Connection” and “Freak When I’m Dead.” Mini mosh pit? Check!

Shortly thereafter, I rolled out to catch the tail end of Daryl Hall & John Oates set on the massive Land’s End stage (cue: busting out your herbal remedies, beers and dancing shoes) and made it just in time to see the rock n’ soulers make everyone’s dream come true with their hit “You Make My Dreams Come True” which sounded as crisp and golden as ever.

The sun began to drift behind the clouds, but that didn’t put a damper on all the fun that MS MR brought to the ready-to-dance crowd with songs like “Fantasy” and their new single “Think of You.”  The chemistry and energy that vocalist Lizzy Paplinger and producer/keys Max Hershenow had was undeniable on stage — killer dance moves, smiles, loving shout outs for San Francisco made the set all that more exciting to watch.

The night wrapped up with packed crowds, gorgeous lights and visuals, and it was full on rave status for both Dillon Francis and Kaskade‘s sets.  Red Hot Chili Pepper‘s also closed the night with classics like “Give It Away” and “Around the World” but the set ended 10 minutes earlier than listed, a slight disappointment.  However, Flea went out graciously thanking the crowd and proclaiming that music is the voice of GOD, and after an amazing weekend at Outside Lands, where the light of music shined, and was thoroughly lived and loved, I just might agree.
