You can say that it snowed last night in Hollywood. As part of Arcade Fire’s highly anticipated “secret show” in Los Angeles, the Capitol Records parking lot had transformed into a shining wonderland of reflectors with fans dancing around in their best dazzling shining costumes as wind blowers erupted a gorgeous volcano of shimmering confetti into the sky. It truly looked as though Hollywood was experiencing a miraculous snowfall.
To celebrate the release of Arcade Fire’s new album, Reflektor, the evening’s theme called for fans to dress as their version of reflectors. Whether that meant to spray paint your body with a metallic gold or silver, or to throw stripes of shining electrical tape across the back of your coat — fans were pulling all the creative tricks from their D.I.Y. magic hats. From a shimmering little mermaid who must’ve been freezing her tail off, to the tin-foiled masked marauder — Arcade Fire’s Reflektor celebration was an incredible experience for all; and we’re not just talking about the lucky 2,5000+ people that got into the show.
Fans were lined up on the blocked street of Hollywood & Vine to view all the action which was very easy to see from afar. We even had nearby friends in some of the neighboring buildings watching the performance from their apartment windows. Fans were so excited about this incredible music experience, that they were actually smiling, clapping, and dancing; now that is quite the Los Angeles indie-rock-crowd rarity if I’ve ever seen one.
Kicking off with the sexy tribal beats of their new hit single, “Reflektor,” Arcade Fire emerged above a 40 + foot stage, looking over Hollywood Blvd and onto a massive crowd of human reflectors.
Arcade Fire’s special performance was all made possible by Intel’s ongoing Music Experiment, in partnership with MTV Iggy. Yes, corporate, but them corporate entities sure love to feel edgy and know how to throw down a party. A joking Win Butler yelled out to the crowd, “How you all doing? Hope they didn’t make you jump through too many hoops. Just kidding, I know they did. We own all your personal information now.”
After hearing and watching Arcade Fire perform just about their entire new album, and some classics, I don’t think any person in the crowd cares about privacy at this point. I mean c’mon, you’re all on Facebook, right?
As much as the crowd loved hearing Arcade Fire’s new album, Reflektor, performed live — the real joy and nostalgia came from the classics. Songs such as “Haiti,” “Sprawl II” and “Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)” really got fans dancing as though their asses were on fire. It was truly a magnificent performance and music experience.
