This past Saturday, Sharon Van Etten took on the El Rey Theater for a somber set of emotional numbers, belting her classic melodies out with a sold-out crowd singing along. Upon entering the stage clad in a black and gold-lamé pencil skirt with her seasoned four-piece backing band serenading along, she picked up her acoustic guitar and kicked off with “Afraid of Nothing,” the opener of her brand new studio album, Are We There, now available via Jagjaguwar.
The shy singer-songwriter opened up and brought nearly every tune from Are We There to life as the night carried on, stopping only to grace her fans with oldies “Save Yourself,” “Serpents,” and of course the epic deep track “All I Can” from 2012’s record, Tramp. Van Etten humbly flaunted her admirable talent throughout her set, constantly switching between guitar, piano, and a toy synthesizer called an Omnichord, all the while singing. Her signature vocal tone, combined with impeccable harmonies from a female backup singer, filled the theater with a passion that only a soul like Van Etten could bring so purely in this era of music.
