Music fans of all ages and cliques, from punk freaks to indie geeks, assembled last Sunday at the Glass House in Pomona for the second and final day of the annual Viva! Pomona, featuring dozens of bands that collectively represent every end of the rock and roll spectrum.
With twenty-two acts scheduled between three stages, each competed to draw the masses with the loudest and most energetic sets imaginable, some of them brand new and some of them well-recognized in southern California. Headlining veterans included Thee Oh Sees, the bay area’s founding fathers of indie rock, and Crystal Antlers, the Long Beach-native favorites who assaulted the audience with their signature punk-influenced power.
Amidst the chaos of drunken teenagers, food trucks, mosh pits, and free merchandise, overwhelming musical talent was plain to see in several local acts. They included Pomona’s own Cogito, who melted their city’s faces with hard-hitting psychedelia, rising NorCal punk rock revivalist group, GRMLN, burgeoning garage band Dead Ships, a heavy metal-blues hybrid outfit called Black Horse Trio, and many more.
