This week’s edition of the long running LA night, Part Time Punks, was focused a bit more on the dream pop/shoegaze side of things with New York’s Tamaryn headlining the night.
Opening up the evening was Seattle based band, Hibou. Fronted by the energetic and charismatic Peter Michel, Hibou got the party started right. It was clear that the band was having a blast as they played their upbeat and optimistic surfy/poppy indie rock.
Following up Hibou was Ariel Pink’s favorite electro sibling duo, Puro Instinct. Singing and playing along to their club-friendly-yet-totally-not-out-of-place-at-an-indie-rock-club backing tracks, Puro Instinct was surprisingly good. Not that I didn’t think they weren’t going to be, I just had no idea what to expect. Singer Piper is semi reminiscent of a young Blondie, while guitarist Skylar, provided proper background vocal support and tasty guitar licks that were effected to the point that if you closed your eyes, you would think she was playing a stack of synths.
Finally closing out the night was Tamaryn. Once again, I wasn’t sure what to expect but as soon as Tamaryn hit the stage, I was hooked. With the hauntingly beautiful and intimate vocal styling’s of Tamaryn, juxtaposed by the wall of sound created by longtime collaborator, Rex John Shelverton, I was in shoegazingdreampopindiegothicsurfrock heaven. Tamaryn put on a truly captivating show that had the packed Echo hanging on to every word.
