Dengue Fever
Playing their first Los Angeles show in two years, the critically acclaimed Dengue Fever made a triumphant return this last Thursday at The Echoplex.
The show got off to a pleasantly weird start with Major Entertainer. With three or four costume changes, intentionally terrible Egyptian themed jokes in between songs, and playing his music out of a suitcase — Major Entertainer definitely lived up to his name. Following his set was the LA based Ethiopian jazz group, Ethio Cali. Led by trumpeter and arranger, Todd Simon, the five-piece ensemble ripped through a funky set, even bringing out Dengue’s David Ralicke and Ethan Holtzman to join in on a cover of Dengue Fever’s cover of Mulatu Astake’s “Yègellé Tezeta”.
Singer Chhom Nimol proved that she just isn’t a superstar in her native Cambodia, but also here in the States. The front of the stage was packed with Cambodian girls and guys swooning over Chhom as she greeted them with hugs. Dengue Fever’s blend of 60s Cambodian pop and psych rock had the packed Echoplex dancing and moving like a sea of waves. When Dengue launched into their four-song encore with their, “1000 Tears of a Tarantula”, the Echoplex turned into a sea of sweaty dancing bodies.
