Cherry Glazerr and The Frights turn The Echo into a punk prom

Man, Cherry Glazerr have seriously gotta be the coolest kids in school. I mean, just look at the photos of these humble kids slaying on the small stage of The Echo last Friday. Front woman, Clem takes a perfect stage dive into the crowd thrilling her young fans and classmates. This is how a high school prom should be!

We did a Grimy TV interview with them a few years ago, and had to pull it because it was a little too revealing at the time. But we hope once they’re all 18 we can share it with you guys. Because it’s pretty damn awesome, and shows just how great these youngins are. And not just because they were fully transparent in the video interview, but because they are juggling school and a rock ‘n’ roll life, and have somehow managed to keep their cool and not become inflated idiots with egos the size of Texas. It’s no surprise that Cherry Glazerr topped our Best LA Bands Under 21 feature.

It was a super young crowd at The Echo for a pre Valentine’s Day show that featured Cherry Glazerr, LA Witch, The Frights, Buttertones, and Tête. Unfortunately, we were only able to catch the last three acts.

The young high school trio known as Cherry Glazerr always bring out a mix of fans both young and old, but tonight’s show was especially full of babies. The oldest people there were either parents or those working the show. Glazerr’s classmates and fans came out in full force infiltrating the stage like a rap group’s posse. Holding up their phones for most of the duration of their performance, you can see through our photos just how many tweens were there, trying to capture the perfect selfie that shows them on stage with Glazerr playing. That’s gotta be some top-notch bragging rights for 16-year-olds.

Per usual, Cherry Glazerr put on a great set that invlolved a lot of fans on stage and taking their chances at a stage dive and crowd surf in the small Echo. It’s nice to see this punk spirit still alive and well in today’s youths — however — it’s definitely not like our day, but it’s cool.

Opening up for Cherry Glazerr were San Diego shredders, The Frights. These guys have quickly become a favorite of ours since catching them a couple months ago at The Smell. We went on to cover them last month at The Regent opening up for FIDLAR and Meatbodies, and were totally stoked on their raw energy and surf-punk vibes. We see some great things happening in The Frights future. Add them to your list of must-see bands.

While The Frights gave us a fun punk lashing, the ladies of LA Witch happily dazed us with their lo-fi sounds. They definitely toned down the vibe, but it was a just the relaxed break the crowd needed after the high octane set from The Frights. And what better way to chill out than to the hazy psychedelic sounds from a group of lovely ladies.
