While I may not be a big fan of surf music, I can definitely stand behind Swami John Reis & The Blind Shake, the latest side project from John Reis (Rocket From The Crypt, Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu). In celebration of the recent release of Modern Surf Classic the band took over The Satellite in Silverlake. What excited me most about this project was the inclusion of Minneapolis surf/punk band, The Blind Shake.

Apparently John reached out to the band a few years ago to see about making their take on a classic surf record. While the record was recorded two years ago in Reis’ native San Diego, it was just released a few weeks ago and the band came together to tour properly this past week.

I knew I was going to be in for a treat, but my expectations were blown away as The Swami wove classic sounding surf guitar lines around the brash and ferocious rhythms of The Blind Shake. In between John mentioned that “surfers make the worst kinds of surf music” while it’s the non-surfers that truly excel at it, and I couldn’t agree more.
