When it comes to die-hard fans, The Wombats may have one of the most dedicated and enthusiastic fan bases in indie rock. Tuesday night’s performance at The Fonda reinforced this fact. In support of their most recent release, Glitterbug, the Liverpool indie rock trio worked the The Fonda into a sweaty frenzy. Led by the charismatic guitarist/singer, Matt Murphy, fans sang along to every single word of every single song. As the band launched into one of their recent singles, “Your Body is a Weapon”, I could barely hear Matt’s endearing Liverpool-ian accent as the crowd sang their hearts out.
I kind of felt bad for the two openers, Cheerleader and Life In Film as their performances received lukewarm response from the crowd, but you really need to step up your game if you’re opening for seasoned vets like The Wombats. Between bassist Tord Øverland-Knudsen running around like a mad man and drummer Dan Haggis’ spot on harmonies, the level of showmanship and musicianship is unparalleled. The Wombats ended the night with their oh-so-catchy “Let’s Dance to Joy Division” leaving their fans stumbling out on to the street covered in sweat and smiles.
