The Growlers

This past Tuesday, The Growlers played last-minute “secret” show at the Constellation Room at The Observatory. The show was in celebration of their Beach Goth 4 announcement, and the only way fans could get in was by purchasing $1 lottery tickets where winners were selected at random. All proceeds from the lottery were donated to the recent Alvarado house fire in Echo Park.

As the crowd waited in anticipation for The Growlers, they got loose to the tunes of DJ Johnny basil, who had a striking resemblance to Iggy Pop. After a two-hour wait, The Growlers finally made their entrance and began to play their first song. The young obsessed teens showed their excitement with extremely rowdy moshing, dancing, and crowd-surfing. I think these kids thought they were at a Minor Threat show. It was kind of annoying. Even The Growlers were a bit irritated as they were trying to perform and kids were constantly rushing the stage. Anytime an over-excited fan would jump onto the stage, frontman Brooks would push them off. He even told them to stop. Can’t blame a kid for trying, but you can’t always disrupt the flow and vibe of band’s set. Especially when most of their songs are stoney-licious.

The Growlers put on an incredible set. Anytime we see these guys, they never disappoint. Once they left the stage, the crowd started chanting “encore! encore! … one more song! one more song!” and “Growlers! Growlers!” They boys came back out to perform two more songs. I never wanted the night to end.
