L7 pummel through night one of double banger at Fonda Theatre

After covering L7’s fierce reunion show last May at The Echo, we had to get another dose of the metal goddesses with their back-to-back gigs at the Fonda Theatre. Last Thursday, L7 kicked off night one of their double banger at the famed Hollywood theatre. The venue was sold-out and packed to the walls with both longtime fans, and newbie fans fulfilling a longtime bucket list item of seeing these women live. Not many fans were fortunate enough to get into their intimate Echo gig, but the Fonda opened their doors to a surplus of happy fans on Thursday evening (and Friday).

Opening up for L7 were Lou Man Group. This was our second time covering the blue-faced band who obviously are a play on both the Blue Man Group and Lou Reed. They played a very tight set covering songs by the Velvet Underground and Lou Reed. Aside from their tunes and style, the combination of lighting against their blue faces made for very trippy stage. Everything seemed like an acid trip. Lou Man Group were a comforting contrast to what was about to explode with L7.

L7 were loud as shit. And although my ears were hurting (forgot ear plugs), I loved every minute of it. Opening their set with “Deathwish,” you can tell L7 were stoked to rock the stage again to a packed house. The women dawned smiles on their faces and radiated an incredible energy. Like a relentless wasp, their energy stung us right in the ass and kept us head banging and dancing all night long.

Bassist, Jennifer Finch brought the show up a notch when she requested that someone in the audience donate a bra because she had forgotten hers at home and was about to spill out of her loose fitting top. Within seconds, quite a few bras flew onstage (all black, go figure) and she proceeded to put it on without leaving the stage, kinda like a magic trick of sorts without taking her top off.

L7 pummeled through fan favorites such as “(Right On) Thru,” “Shitlist” and “Pretend We’re Dead,” among many other ferocious tracks. Never skipping a beat and always on point both stylistically and musically, L7 gave fans an epic show that won’t soon be forgotten.
