Mondays are a challenge to go out after heavy weekends but, when The Roxy has a band with the intensity and allure of Algiers, you have to push yourself to go and experience their performance. The night was kind of slow but the crowd was stoked to have this dynamic band from the deep South performing here on the infamous Sunset Strip. Their entrance to the stage was between theatrical and solemn, juxtaposed with their immediate after burst of energy. They had the crowd’s undivided attention right from the start.
Algiers were entrancing with their eclectic style and sound. They are not afraid to experiment and mix their multi-instrumental skills. Cymbals were played as cellos, briefcases were opened to a Pandora’s box of sounds, while guttural vocals coming from the depths of singer/guitarist Franklin James Fisher’s throat evoked some kind of dark wilderness. We all felt it. And it was all heightened with Algiers’ social-charged lyrics that glistened with a powerful gospel tone. Without a doubt, Algiers are a most interesting fearless blend of noise and strength. They are absolutely stunning live.
The end of the show was so abrupt that we didn’t realized it was over. It was a very proper exit for the different levels of intensity throughout the night. It left us with a need for more Algiers.
