Last week’s Psychedelic Furs show at the Teragram Ballroom was a bucket list shoot for me as I’ve been a huge Psych Furs fan forever. I owe this to my aunt who introduced me to The Furs back when I was a wee little boy. In fact, at the ripe young age of 10, my very first concert experience was The Furs at The Wiltern as they toured their Midnight to Midnight record. With that in mind, I was very curious to see how the chaps held up almost 30 years later. Thankfully, they did not disappoint. Actually, they were better than expected.
Jumping right into “Heartbeat” from their 4th album, Mirror Moves, a wave of nostalgia washed over me as Richard Butler’s distinctive vocals took me right back to my youth. With the front of the stage crowded with the older demographic that you would expect, Richard and his brother and bassist Tim, worked the stage like the seasoned pros that they are. It was when The Furs launched into “Mr. Jones”, that I just about lost my shit. I was completely thrilled that it made the set list since it was one of the deeper cuts (and one of my favorite songs) from Talk Talk Talk. Playing a pretty well balanced set of all the hits, it was songs like “Susan’s Strange” and “Highwater Days” that really made it a memorable set for me. I’ve seen plenty of old timer bands play and sometimes it feels like it’s bit of a desperate show, but with The Furs, it felt legit and sounded great.
