If you like to dance, you’re probably familiar with Salsa, the genre that took the world by storm back in the 60s and 70s lead by the legendary Fania Records. The historical music is being evolved into contemporary sounds by Calentura, a night created by Los Angeles based party crews Subsuelo and Late Night Laggers under Fania’s wing.
The El Rey Theater was taken over by Calentura for the release of Fania’s new album Global Bassment encompassing remixes of original tracks blended by producers from different corners of the world with today’s electronic dance music. This album holds the label’s historical heritage morphed into tropical bass.
The night featured Dengue Dengue Dengue from Peru and Tropkillaz from Brazil who painted the night with Salsa, Dembow, Dancehall, Cumbia, Kuduro, Zouk Bass, Baile Funk integrated with heavy bass. Los Rakas from Panama via the bay area put on an excellent live show while the Calentura squad dressed the stage with salsa and samba dancers plus a twerk team that kept it hot with booty shaking turning the theater into a global festival from start to finish.
