Explosions In The Sky
It was a rainy Friday night in Los Angeles. This evening in particular called for beautiful music inside of the historic Theater at the Ace Hotel. Starting off the night was Disappears. The seats gradually filled up while the Chicago group’s unique sound began to echo through the room. With an alternative rock sound blending elements of 90s grunge and garage rock, Disappears had our full attention right from the jump. Frontman Brian Case gives off a very moody and dramatic presence. It’s actually quite intriguing. That same vibe and presence was heavily carried throughout their entire suspensful set. I didn’t hold high expectations for any act opening for Explosions in the Sky, but Disappears kinda blew me away.
As Disappears warmed up the crowd with an impressive set, the excitement brewed for Explosions in the Sky. That excitement grew even more thick as the band casually made their way on stage prior to set up and tune their own equipment. It’s was quite humbling and not something you see often with headlining acts. A few waves and giggles were exchanged between the thrilled crowd and the humble band.
Once the lights went down it was truly the start of this amazing night. And what a performance it was. This band has such a reputation for providing fans with a beautifully emotive listening experience. Explosions in the Sky are like a sound bath for your ears. They have the ability to wash away all your problems and start you refreshed and anew.
Their unique marriage of sounds was a cathartic experience. Without words, Explosions in the Sky were able to move fans to another realm; where we were completely and utterly lost in the music.
Explosions recently dropped their long awaited sixth album The Wilderness. In terms of scale, this band truly continues to build on their talents. In every song, you get the emotion throughout their many succulent crescendos and climaxes.
Once I was sitting in my assigned seat I really couldn’t get over the expressions appearing on the crowds’ faces. The theater was pitch black, okay. These guys had a large bar in front of them and behind, setting off their phenomenal beams of lights. So here we all are in this dark theater and I just looked from the center to my left and right, to find elated faces in bursts of light. There was pure joy and amazement across the crowds’ faces. Fully immersed and lost in the moment, no head was turned and no mouths were chattering. Explosions In The Sky’s music is universal and through that, everyone was clearly joined together.
