The Summer ain’t over yet Los Angeles! August is chock full of must-see live music so clear your calendar now. There are plenty of great under-the-stars shows to enjoy at first-rate outdoor venues such as The Hollywood Bowl and The Greek Theatre including Ryan Adams & The Shining, Sufjan Stevens, Alabama Shakes, and Rodrigo y Gabriela. Summer festivals are also delivering on the musical goods including Berserktown 3, an annual underground hardcore/punk/thrash rebellion and Echo Park Rising, an upbeat local, family friendly, and largely female-fronted band driven event. August is also the perfect time to catch rare, throwback performances by recently reunited groups and returning artists such as PJ Harvey, Belly, Guided By Voices and Digable Planets. Beat the heat with cool concerts!
August 3 — Marissa Nadler at The Echo
Singer-songwriter Marissa Nadler just released her riveting new album Strangers via Sacred Bones earlier this year and now you can catch her performing deeply ethereal tunes like “Janie In Love” live at The Echo this month. She’ll be touring with a full backing band and supporting acts Wrekmeister Harmonies and Muscle and Marrow.
August 3 — Yellowman at Echoplex
The unstoppable dancehall and reggae legend Yellowman will be headlining the 6th Annual Rumble in the Jungle, presented by Los Angeles’ ace weekly reggae dance party Dub Club. Joining Yellowman are Dub Club regulars DJ Tom Chasteen, Boss Harmony, as well as special guests Om Unit, Roomate and Sam XL. Extra bass reinforcements courtesy of Pure Filth, that will guarantee you will be booty shakin’ all night. It doesn’t get better than this!
August 4 — Radiohead at The Shrine Auditorium
As Grimy Goods writer Steven Ward so eloquently described Radiohead’s new (and ninth!) studio album, “Even at its most minimal of arrangements, A Moon Shaped Pool retains a complex, almost troubling, intimacy at the cellular level that shines through its loudly arresting orchestral barrages; while Yorke’s vocal utterances, as breathlessly despondent and hysterical as ever, remain the most critical in Radiohead’s instrumental arsenal.” Now how could fans not want to hear and experience that live? Check out one or both of their upcoming Los Angeles shows on August 4 and 8.
August 4 — The Official 2MEX Benefit Show w/ Dilated Peoples and The Visionaries at Regent Theater
Rapper 2Mex is practically a Los Angeles underground hip-hop institution. Unfortunately, he recently suffered from diabetes complications which resulted in the amputation of his right leg from the knee down. The L.A. hip-hop community is rallying around him to give back to the man who gave us such great musical and lyrical passion and inspiration. Performing live, with proceeds going to 2Mex’s medical costs, are some of the finest hip hop acts around including Dilated Peoples and The Visionaries, Sick Jacken, The Beat Junkies and Supernatural. Get out and support!
