Digable Planets at The Regent

Digable Planets at The Regent

When a prolific band from the past springs back from their heyday with a reunion show, it’s hard to know what to expect. Will they sound the same? How will the energy be? Expectations are set high, and fans are hopeful, but sometimes comebacks can be a disappointment; that was not the case on Monday night at The Regent. When 90’s hip hop stalwarts, Digable Planets took over The Regent in Downtown LA for two days of straight sold out shows, they owned the night like they had never stopped.

Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler, Mary Ann “Ladybug Mecca” Vieira, and Craig “Doodlebug” Irving entered the stage with Peaches & Herbs’ “Reunited” and let me tell you, it indeed felt so good! Smooth and strong, Digable Planets dropped hip hop classics that paved the way for similar 90s acts, as well as modern acts today. With hands up in the air and an elated crowd singing along to the slick choruses, we were reminded how cool and relevant Digable Planets are despite their years of separation.

Camp Lo opened the night setting up the ground for was about to become a memorable night and were joined by Butterfly for a smooth transition. Everybody’s favorite closed the night with the audience yelling that they missed them and asking for Digable Planets to come back. We hope for the same thing.
