Femi Kuti & the Positive Force are no strangers to Los Angeles. The son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, came to the El Rey Theatre drawing fans eager to hear the message on from his latest album One People One World.

Singing about hope, but also sharing the dark political realities of Africa and Nigeria, Femi Kuti’s lyrics engaged the crowd as one. His speech exposing corruption and criminality follows his father’s steps voicing out social concerns with expectations of a better future for all. His sax riffs blended the traditional sounds of Afrobeat and with reggae influences. Drenching sweat, Kuti’s performance was energetic and enchanted the crowd.

The Afro-funk band Afrolicious opened the night warming up the venue with non-stop dancing from start-to-finish. Electrifying brass and luscious percussion, the band was the perfect pairing for this night charged with strength, hope, and beats.
