In light of the terrible fires happening around Los Angeles this week, folks found solace at the Masonic Lodge inside the Hollywood Forever Cemetery this past Friday night. The lovely trio, Mountain Man, sold out the venue for one of two nights. Comprised of Molly Erin Sarle, Alexandra Sauser-Monnig, and Sylvan Esso’s Amelia Meath, Mountain Man is just lovely musicianship. Having been eight long years since the ladies’ debut record, Made The Harbor, they are back with their surprise follow up, Magic Ship, which doesn’t even come close to disappointing. It’s not quite suiting to classify the trio as “quiet folk music” creators, because what they create is uniquely powerful. With a lone studio microphone center stage, the three surround it, arms around each other pulling tightly to create a tight knit unit and just softly sing. What comes out of their mouths is ever pure. The room was so silent, my camera shutter was the loudest pin drop. Immediately following the welcoming applause, the trio dove right into “Blue Mountain” off Magic Ship. Instantly the listeners were captivated by the lush, hushed harmonies. Sure we were in for a beautiful show, we stood so attentive to what was before us. Humbly continuing with “Rang Tang Ring Toon”, Mountain Man bounced their voices off each other with grace. There really isn’t a venue more fitting than the Masonic Lodge for their show. It was an all around beautiful experience. Meath also took the moment to thank everyone for coming to their “aggressively quiet” show. We were the thankful ones! I also believe I heard someone shout out “God is a woman!,” multiple times. Amen!
