That ol’ patriarchy got ya down? Is it making you want to tear your hair out and your skin crawl? Is it burning a hole through your chest with fiery rage? You my friend are not alone and if you need to vent then you must make it to an Object as Subject show.

Paris Hurley (composition, vox, drums, dance), Emilia “Pony Sweat” Richeson (dance, drums, vox), Patty Schemel (drums), Bree Tomas (bass), and Krissy Barker (vox, bass, synth bass) make up this queer, feminist, art punk band and they include a mid-set, audience-participation-scream-at-the-top of your lungs exorcism that lets face it, we all pretty much need this week.

Object as Subject began their set bathed in a green swampy haze, prostrate from the burdens of the world the silence was broken by clawing at the ground, heavy breathing, and sighs; the type of exhale that expels exasperation. That breath grew into animalistic growls as inner demons were freed. When the niceties of expectations were fully shed, Hurley and Richeson flung themselves into unbridaled fleshy expression.

The band is made up of only bass and drums which serves as a call-to-arms of your most primitive survival responses. Through the pounding percussion, war cries and flailing bodies, a powerful anger is expressed that is succinctly female.

With the government medaling with women’s health this past week, Object as Subject were a visual and auditory representation of the hearts of so many of us.

If you need to release some rage you should definitely check out their residency at The Satellite the month of July. I am sure Object as Subject will continue to have plenty to rage about for some time …

Opening for Object as Subject at The Satellite was My Baby who rarely plays US shows, their computerless EDM set was full of DM and produced a most unusual sight at The Satellite: a big chunk of the crowd full out dancing!
