Thursday night was a fun combo of favorites at The Satellite. The Yip Yops appeared in their new slimmed down version. Ison Van Winkle and Ross Murakami have gone out on their own Murakami on drums and manning a laptop and backing vocals while lead singer Ison switches between synth and guitar. The duo has been hinting at this line up change for sometime on their social media and many were curious how they would sound but everyone was put at ease that their favorite up-and-comers could still light up a stage.
Ison is held down a smidge with his added responsibilities but the two-piece really brings to the forefront Ross’ drumming skills. With a newly added light show, they are definitely still a show you must see.
Headlining the night was Acid Tongue yet another band that frequently changes their line up due to location. The core of the band are Guy Keltner on guitar/lead vox and Ian Cunningham on drums. Recently they have added Peter Doherty (Mars and the Massacre) on bass and Jasmina Hirschl (from Mexico City) on keys and included regular Alessio Peck (from Paris) on second guitar.
Not only is Acid Tongue’s line up hard to pin down so is their music. Their sound reflects influences from electronica to 50’s rock to 90’s alt rock. The band added a visual dimension for their Satellite show with Stranger Liquids providing a liquid light show.
Opening the night was Hawk Percival and Friends.
The Yip Yops will be releasing new music soon (half their set was previously unheard songs) so we will be keeping an eye out for new music announcements.
