There were so many great shows on Friday night but it’s likely Devour records birthday celebration at DIY venue The Rec Center, for founder Sergio Candelario was the most wild.
Sergio and his band Katatonic with longtime bandmates Giuliano Scarfo and Brian Melendez, and scream queen Nathalie Martin opened the night so the band could get to partying which they did with vigor making random appearances throughout the night on stage and off.
Katatonic is punk, heavy and aggressive. Martin regularly attacks Melendez who then regularly attacks his guitar, the guitar getting the worst of it.
The night was stacked with a bunch of bands including Slaughterhouse with heavy hitter Nick Aguilar on drums. Terminal A aka Sexbeats who called up some guests for their tribute to Gun Club and The Cramps and who were the soundtrack to the absolute pure destruction of Sergio’s piñata via several intense mosh pits leaving the floor a swamp of spilled drinks and candy.
Liposuction who performed in surgical garb were followed by a slightly mellower Shark Toys.
Wrapping up the night were Trap Girl who stirred up a new pot of fans. The band were playing their second show of the night!
In between sets were DJ’s Fancy Sinatra (great name), Tony Knox and Paul Cinnamon.
The Rec Center, as a DIY venue in the middle of nowhere in downtown LA can be a bit of the Wild West. It’s defiantly best suited for the most adventurous of music fans and those who crave music not on the homogenous radar.
