There is little that could be more iconic than seeing Grace Jones perform on a stage like The Hollywood Bowl. Her potent dance tracks are the blazing stars by which so many artists have found their way — and plenty more fans have found cathartic release. From her stunning debut with Portfolio, which completely transformed a cultural as well as sonic understanding of disco, all the way to her seminal Slave to Rhythm. But her hits span her entire career: from “Love is the Drug” and “Pull Up to the Bumper” to her cover of “La Vie en Rose.” This is not the Grace Jones experience you’re going to want to miss for if there ever was a venue that could possibly due her justice it’s the open-air amphitheater of the Bowl.

Electro-pop outfit CHVRCHES will be bringing with them wave after cascading wave of synth-pop ragers. Their first album The Bones of What You Believe introduced the world to their style of hardcore-synth propulsion. Songs like “The Mother We Share” and “Recover” explode with dually obliterating and hook-filled electronica. Since then they’ve released three albums including Every Open Eye and their most recent Screen Violence. And singer Lauren Mayberry remains the lightning-rod focusing all their euphoric energy, her strident vocals cut through the riveting and aggressive pop melodies. Even if you’re not familiar with CHVRCHES you’re going to come out of their set with half a dozen new favorite songs.

Charlotte Adigéry & Bolis Pupul open the night and will no doubt be pulling bop after and banger from their debut album Topical Dancer. It’s fitting they are opening up for both Grace Jones, whose music defined an era, as their own feels like a zeitgeist-defining piece of satire disguised as delirium-drenched dance pop. One that they refer to as “a snapshot of how we think about pop culture in the 2020s.” From institutional racism, cultural appropriation, the narcissism-driven era of social media, and post-colonialism. No topic is too dense or complex for the duo to crunch down into incisive and ridiculously catchy songs.
