Singer-songwriter Gal Musette’s newest single and music video, “Je vois le ciel,” marks the LA-based musician’s return with an embrace of French lyrics and avant-garde instrumentation. Translated to “I see the sky” in English, the song is a significant shift in musicality without sacrificing what Gal has already established. Musette’s allusions to bal-musette, the musical genre from which her name derives, are more prominent than ever through both her visuals and music.
One of the notable changes in Gal’s music is the black-and-white video that bears a resemblance to old-timey films, aligning with the song’s message of time moving all too fast to be bothered by the passage. The whimsical mischief of Gal seemingly stalking an older couple while a masked figure follows undoubtedly adds to the lucid feel that her music consistently delivers. Alongside drowsy guitars and soft drums, “Je vois le ciel” is sure to instill a sense of surrealism.
As pleasant as her vocals are, Gal’s biggest strength in the song is the lurid lyrics. “Les mille matins que je passe toute seule, je vois le ciel passer de l’or au bleu,” which translates to “The thousand mornings that I spend alone, I see the sky turn from gold to blue” is a clear example of how she paints an image through the music. It’s a skill that stands as the spirit of the single and perhaps something that will become more prominent for future releases.
