Cayucas

Cayucas are back with another breezy, summer-inclined single with the release of “Sayulita,” they will be playing the Theater at Ace Hotel on Aug. 27 with Echo & The Bunnymen. A sunny daydream of a place brothers Zach and Ben Yudin have never visited — the track is an ode to the kind of mystical destination you might fantasize about yourself journeying to. The song imagines it as a sleepy seaside town with all the relaxation, cold beer, and romance that anyone could ever ask for.

Amidst the tangle of elated guitars and tender melancholy “Sayulita” lists back and forth between fantasy and reality. “I’m tired of living life on the run,” they croon against the restless waves of surf rock that ebb and flow on the single. While images of blazing sunrises and magically-purple sunsets cut through haze of Cayucas’ dream town — like the coastal equivalent of “Hotel California.”

“Sayulita” is the second single from Cayucas released this year, following “Topo Ride the Wave.” Plenty of bands have their niche but the duo continues to create constantly evolving iterations of vintage surf rock. From jangly guitars and sublime vocal harmonies, Cayucas might echo The Beach Boys but their sound is distinctly their own.

“‘Sayulita’ was a demo that we wrote in around 2016-17. Something about this place, Sayulita, we were hearing about, it had a nice ring to it. We’ve never been, and have no plans to go, but lyrically I like to create a sort of mythical place in my mind that encompasses the mood. The song has a sort of Eagle-esque, ‘Hotel California’ quality to it, but it’s really about the idea of going somewhere in your mind. Even if you’re not actually there, it takes you away for a while.”
