Ethiopian-Sudanese artist Alemeda has shared another punchy fusion of rock-pop in the form of “Boy Of The Month.” It’s also the second song she’s unveiled this year, with each new release bringing us closer to the arrival of her debut EP. On her latest single she offers up another ferociously frantic anthem about leaving disastrous exes exactly where they belong: in the past and off your phone.
Against jittery percussion and the grate of guitars, “Boy Of The Month” sees Alemeda serving up some soberingly sharp truths addressed to an ex trying to squirm their way back into their life. “You think ’cause you had me, you can have me again,” she scoffs. “You should’ve known from the jump, all good things come to an end.” The track’s angsty and caustic sonics reverberate with the 23-year-old artist’s characteristically biting but rousing lyricism.
Deliciously nonchalant and irreverently honest, Alemeda uses her music to illustrate in stark terms a refusal to be encumbered by people who don’t respect her. Learning from past mistakes — “Used to say that I was done, but I was lyin’ / This time, I’m leavin’ you alone” — she emerges empowered enough to cut the bullshit and drop dead-beat weight.
Alemeda first garnered attention with the release of singles like “Gonna Bleach My Eyebrows” and “Summer Break.” Both of which revealed early on her capacity for penning cathartic songs about discovering one’s own radiant self-worth alongside, as well as dismissing the voices of those who hate to see such growth in others. Those first few singles also ebb and flow with a much slicker alt-R&B sound.
As she prepares for the arrival of her debut EP, Alemeda has continued to entangle herself with a variety of genres. Injecting her soulful and veracious music with a fiery rage on tracks like the hyperkinetic “UR SO FULL OF IT” — a song that teeters between pop-punk and shock-to-your-system rock.
