Film composer and artist Robert Ouyang Rusli — who also operates as the experimental pop artist OHYUNG — recently shared two new singles in the form of “Huele a Fraude” (feat. STEFA*) and “Monument to Possibilities.” Conceived as part of their expansive 53-track original score for the A24 film Problemista directed by Julio Torres. Even for someone like Rusli with countless experience scoring short and feature films, it was an admittedly ambitious undertaking.

It might be disingenuous to judge the entirety of the soundtrack on just two tracks. Yet the preview afforded by both songs reveals a confluence of emotional grandiosity inherent to both Rusli’s motion picture soundtracks and OHYUNG’s ecstasy-saturated concoctions.

On “Huele a Fraude,” they conjure up a synth-fluttering anthem coursing with the euphoric energy offered via its entirely Spanish lyricism. Urged forward by the clamor of OHYUNG’s effervescent cries and the emphatic vocals of STEFA* — the track accelerates within this never-ending shimmer of joy. One that blissfully melds together their love of frenzied and ferocious pop.

In contrast, “Monument to Possibilities” finds Rusli composing this measured crescendo of triumphantly exulting instrumentals. Rising out of a spacey entanglement with the dulcet clang of a xylophone with the eerie beckoning of woodwinds and droning strings. All of which grow ever more ethereal as the harmonic chants of its vocalists start to manifest amidst the sublime sounds being woven. Suddenly, the whole melody opens up like sunbeams through the gloam as those radiant voices start to leap and soar. Rising higher and higher alongside its swelling tones and textures.
