The story of Os Mutantes begins with the original trio: brothers Arnaldo Baptista and Sérgio Dias Baptista alongside Rita Lee. Although the lineup has changed drastically over the decades — with Dias keeping the spirit of the band alive through additions as his bandmates have gone on to pursue solo projects — their influence has never waned.
They may have started out inspired by the sounds of The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, but by the end of the decade, they’d left a lasting impact on musicians and bands from North America to Europe. From Beck and David Byrne to Kurt Cobain — their music mixture of bossa nova, tropicália, samba, and sounds plucked from Brazilian traditions with modern psychedelia has made them consequential to so many artists. Their 1968 self-titled debut paved the way for their rise while their fourth album Jardim Elétrico remains an indelible part of their catalog.
Since Arnaldo and Lee’s departure the band has continued to perform live and release albums, with Dias wrangling together a new group to keep Os Mutantes evolving. Now he’s joined by Esmeria Bulgari (vocals), Henrique Peters (keyboards), Vinicius Junqueira (bass), and Claudio Tchernev (drums). With their assistance, the band unveiled their eleventh studio album Zzyzx in 2020 and has since continued to dazzle and enrapture through their international live performances.
Opening for Os Mutantes will be Ghost Funk Orchestra, which was originally formed as a one-man band by composer/multi-instrumentalist Seth Applebaum. Now they are a full band with four albums under their belt and an eclectic love for playing mixtures of soul, psych rock, and salsa. Making them a suitably funky band to open up for the Brazilian masters.
