Oakland-based Feefawfum has unleashed another rip-roaring expulsion of noise rock with “DKA,” a brand-new single that fiercely contends with the consequences of profit-driven healthcare. First formed by drummer Farley Miller — now joined by Kevin Sullivan (bass, vox), Emma Greenbaum (Mellotron, vox), Kelvin Zhang (guitar), and Theo Slavin (guitar) — the band has been steadily building toward the release of their new album 100. Their latest offering arrives as the third raucous single to be shared from the record following previous singles “Appetite” and “So Capable.”

Like many of the songs on the forthcoming album, “DKA” serves as a raw and bristling expression of Miller’s experiences as a type 1 diabetic living in the United States. Its title references a potentially fatal diabetic complication known as diabetic ketoacidosis, which typically occurs due to rising blood sugar levels related to a deficiency of insulin in the body. But thanks to a healthcare system that values dollars over lives accessibility to life-saving medications in this country is only reserved for those who can afford it. Leaving those who can’t with no option but to dangerously ration their insulin.

Against shrieking guitars and pummeling drums, Feefawfum rages against this reality. Bending their madcap sonics and indomitable will toward placing a searing spotlight on the blatant inequities that plague our society. “I hope I live to see a raise,” Miller howls desperately against the song’s crashing rush. “So I can change my blood’s pH.”

The music video for “DKA” was directed by Slavin and follows Miller as he’s stalked by a grotesque personification of diabetic ketoacidosis — which appears as a hooded figure wearing green dish-washing gloves and a creepy-as-hell mask with a donut and cake protruding where its eyes should be. Although the day starts out perfect, it doesn’t take long for the creature to catch up with him on a park bench as he sits and reads.

A terrifying scramble ensues as Miller tries to escape in vain. The video’s final moments are easily its most disturbing, the creature pouring a macabre mixture of substances onto him that could easily be syrups and powders (as from deserts) as they could be bodily fluids.
