SPELLING — the moniker of experimental pop artist Chrystia Cabral — shares another mystical portal into her sublime universe with the release of her new album SPELLING & the Mystery School. She will also be performing at the South Pasadena Masonic Lodge on October 7th and Bob Baker Marionette Theater on October 8th. With a reputation for putting on soul-eddying and impassioned shows, it’s not a night of live music you’ll want to miss.
The new record arrives overflowing with resplendent emotion, draped in enthralling instrumentals. If this is your first introduction to Cabral’s spellbinding music — prepare to be whisked away into a realm of enchanting melodic possibilities. From its hypnotic first track — materializing as the surreal “Walk Up to Your House” — Cabral’s haunting vocals alongside frenetic strings compel you closer. On “Under the Sun,” those strings return to the forefront as rousing shrieks, before giving way to a swirling soundscape of grandiose and shimmering synths.
Both “They Start the Dance” and “Cherry” slow things down to a slow burn of frayed and sizzling sonics. Then there’s the electronic and riff simmer of the aptly titled “Haunted Water,” which builds toward a fiery effervescent release. While the ghostly and vaporous “Phantom Farewell” — a song that tied a newfound reliance on self-love with a hard goodbye. “Revolution” puts such growth in starker terms as Cabral elucidates: “What I want is a fire that never goes out / I’ve got all this desire / In a world of doubt / I’m in a permanent revolution.”
