Tom Morello has launched a new chapter with the release of “Soldier in The Army of Love,” the lead single from his forthcoming solo album. With a slew of festival appearances across Europe next month and two U.S. appearances at Louder Than Life and Aftershock in the fall, the Rage Against the Machine frontman has delivered another bombastic anthem to blow fans away with.
A grandiose rock song that bristles with rowdy insubordination, “Soldier in The Army of Love” roars along to ferocious takedowns of fascists and authoritarian forces, brandishing all the colossal sonics and withering riffs that Morello is known to produce. “The lambs got together led the butcher to the slaughter,” he spits with gleeful dissidence. “I know the girl who set them free and I’m glad they never caught her.”
Joining him on both the new song as a co-writer and its accompanying music video is his son Roman Morello, the pair bridging generational divides with raucous urgency. The lyric video unfolds as a series of photographs taken by Chris Anthony, each one capturing the vibrant defiance that appears in the persevering faces and stalwart figures of those who put their bodies on the frontline at protests and picket lines.
“‘Soldier in The Army Of Love’ is the debut single from my first ever full-length solo rock album,” Morello explained. “It’s a salute to the transformative power of music as both a balm to heal the soul and a battering ram to fight for justice. The song also has a generational rock n roll bloodline. The heaviest riffs were written by my 13-year-old guitar wizard son Roman, who also plays the shredding solo, giving me hope that there’s a new generation of soldiers in the army of love coming to the rescue.”
Never one to reign in himself or others when speaking truth to power, last month Morello joined students camped at Cal State Northridge in an act of solidarity with their calls for university divestment over the Palestinian genocide. A few weeks later he celebrated the successful boycott of Barclays Bank, ending its sponsorship of several major U.K. music festivals like Download Fest and Isle of Wight.
