A singer/songwriter, producer, and DJ, Baobei is proving herself as a new captivating voice operating within the UK dance music scene. Her approach to creating engrossing soundscapes of drum and bass or garage—mixing in a soulful pop touch—is informed as much by her eclectic background and education as it is by her talent for tapping into the raw emotive power of those genres.

Baobei was first introduced to music at four years old when she started her classical training in piano and violin. That formative and foundational experience eventually led her to try and find her own sound—starting with covers on YouTube and then a master’s degree in Electronic Music.

Her first single arrived as a collaboration with Sisko for the jungle track “Overstayed,” with hypnotic rushes of bass and swells of electronica submerging beneath their tumultuous waves. Yet of all its aural enchantments, nothing comes close to Baobei’s ethereally glowing but heartbroken vocals.

In May of this year she returned with two new singles all her own: “Stereo,” a lovelorn lament synced to an anxious DnB beat, and “Bluff” with its friends-teetering-on-lovers tensions spill desperately alongside a torrent of heady bass, dreamy acoustics, and jagged electronics.

Baobei’s latest, “How You Like Me Now,” fuses all her prismatic tastes as a DJ and producer into an exhilarating dance track. Where gleaming electro-pop and radiant vocals dominate, smoothing out the raucous edge of its oscillating rhythms until they’re smoothed and buoyant.

With just a handful of songs, Baobei has assured listeners she possesses a deft skill for creating thrumming dance tracks that not only dominate the dancefloor but also lift your mind, body, and soul to higher planes. Her voice and songwriting are dually ethereal and melancholic—powerhouse conduits for everything from the euphoria of electronic music to the heartache of pop and R&B.
