Growing up on a diet that consists of nu-metal and alternative hip-hop is sure to lead to some adventurous places as far as creativity goes, which happens to be the case for singer-songwriter TeZATalks and her latest album, Black Girl American Horror Story. Making what she describes as “hardcore-pop,” the Seattle-based artist first made a splash in 2016 and 2017 through singles like “STFD,” which were more reminiscent of abrasive emo rap popular at the time than her later sound.

However, beginning in the 2020s, her style evolved into something genuinely unique and separate from peers on similar trajectories. With Black Girl American Horror Story, Teza infuses her distinct style with firsthand experiences that speak to her upbringing and what she hopes to see for future generations.

Carrying over a somewhat horrorcore-inspired sound, “ELVIRA” is a gothic display of braggadocio where trap hi-hats and blaring guitars in the background clash. Despite the two wildly different instruments grinding against each other as if going through an assembly line of Teza’s creation, it all comes together under an abrasive energy that Teza exhibits. If anything, she’s the common denominator between varying sounds, serving as a glue for genres to meld.

“THE REVENGE” comes from a completely different place than “ELVIRA,” opting for a moody guitar complimenting Teza’s varied melodies. Aside from the vocals, which show the same level of dynamism heard on earlier tracks, the crippling truths at the song’s core are what separate Teza from others, simultaneously experimenting successfully and staying true to herself as an artist.

On top of carving out what might be a new genre that artists retroactively get placed in or take inspiration from in the future, Teza knows what beats to hit each time in order to resonate. However, to get to this point, she had to stare at the void and confront reality for all its darkness, coming out on the other end with a guiding light for people to follow.

“I wanted this album to reflect the stories that often go unheard—stories of pain, resilience, and transformation,” said Teza. “‘Black Girl American Horror Story’ is not just an album; it’s an experience. It’s about owning your darkness and finding strength in your scars. I want people to feel the horror, embrace it, and ultimately become stronger because of it.”
