In a time when everything felt uncertain, it was nice to be around community. Friday night at the Fonda Theater in Hollywood was a refreshing scene away from the somber vibes of the L.A. County wildfires, thanks to a concert by Glass Spells. The synth-pop band hailing from San Diego were supported by post-punk bands Haunt Me, based in San Antonio, Texas, and Donzii, from Miami, Florida.

A Valentine Card Made for Music Lovers

THE CUTEST VALENTINE CARD RECORD PLAYER THAT PLAYS MUSIC

In the sea of all-black outfits, Misfit jackets, and anarchy patches — and a crowd full of secret fans of Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo, Adam’s Family, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show — fans quietly grooved to ’80s-inspired sounds like “Dancing in the Dark” by Haunt Me and “Sand” by Donzii. The room felt warm, filled with Chicano pride and lovers of synthesizer music, both young and old. I had hoped that everyone would break into some funky dance moves or do the Monster Mash since retro vibes engulfed the room.

Glass Spells’ lead singer, Tania Costello, twirled her heart out on stage and surprised the crowd with a cover of “Nunca Es Suficiente” by Natalia Lafourcade. Still, everything and everyone felt subdued and emotionally drained, even for an L.A. crowd. I didn’t blame the performers or fans. We were (and are) still mourning the loss of an entire community in Los Angeles. I didn’t know what everyone was supposed to feel, but I was happy everyone got a break from the headlines, came together for a special night, and wiggled a little in enjoyment. Music is medicine, and Glass Spells helped heal some wounds, even for just an evening.

Next time will be more joyous. Thank you, Glass Spells, for am electric night. !Viva Los Angeles!
