In their first release ever under the L.Mayland name, guitarist Lizzie Mayland of The Last Dinner Party fame is launching their solo career with a debut single, “Lighthouse.” Although The Last Dinner Party is best known for their lavish production style, “Lighthouse” finds Mayland embracing a singer-songwriter style that allows their vocals to take the spotlight. Through an acoustic guitar and delicate strings, they turn the idea of using a lighthouse as a symbol of isolation and instead turn it into a cautiously optimistic tale about finding true love for the first time.
“I made this EP with the WONDERFUL @imogenandtheknife and @willlister 🌟 it was such a gentle and joyful experience and I’m so so proud of what we made together,” shared Mayland on social media.
Mayland’s voice, which moves from sonorous to gentle and back again throughout the single’s runtime, remains the center of attention for the majority of the song. Even when the strings come into play and serve as clouds for them to drift over, their take on falling in love goes to show the maturity they’ve already reached as a songwriter. While The Last Dinner Party has undoubtedly carved out their own corner in the music landscape, “Lighthouse” proves how each member is capable of producing strong material on their own.
