Less than a year after what might be her strongest album to date, My Method Actor, Nilüfer Yanya’s “Cold Heart” single finds the British singer-songwriter in a meditative state. At the same time, the crunchy electronic drums and feelings of betrayal give the track an edge representative of Yanya’s inventiveness.

In complementing the expectedly stellar production, the songwriting from Yanya similarly highlights the desolation she feels in the wake of someone’s cruelty through lines like “Hell lives under all that hungers.” Her decision to sing in a softer register despite contrasting the intensifying instrumental shows how calculating she can be, where that clash echoes the song’s emphasis on a cold heart that burns.

However, “Cold Heart” truly takes off at the last minute. Leading up to that tipping point, the gradually aggressive drums and buzzing synths in the background fold under the weight of a sweeping string section so sharp in tone, it’s as if swords were used as a substitute. The balance between fragile emotional states and grinding sonic textures makes “Cold Heart” and Yanya’s music in general so distinct from other electronic-adjacent artists.
