Singer-songwriter and producer boylife has returned with his new album, jones, which features songs like “junior.” Following his 2021 debut album, gelato, Ryan Yoo took a four-year hiatus – marked by opening for keshi on tour in 2024 – before returning to his solo career with a slew of singles leading up to jones.
The project, which features a rotating ensemble of producers and songwriters to ensure each track has its own identity distinct from the rest of the tracklist, ranges from trap-inspired crooners to atmospheric slow waltzes.
From the get-go of “junior,” the high-pitched vocals at the start and strumming of a guitar that electrify the track’s otherwise simplistic production make “junior” a near heavenly listening experience. However, it’s Yoo’s vocals that elevate the song, with the lyrics being the embodiment of what it’s like to be head over heels.
While “junior” could have called it a day at the halfway point, the track reaches new heights by letting the production breathe and create a calming atmosphere. Then, the strings – arranged by Ted Case, best known for his work with Laufey and SPELLLING – come into play, sweeping you off your feet like the ending to a romance movie.
Considering Yoo’s comeback has come with a bigger rollout than gelato, complete with a pre-recorded Amazon Music show among other endeavors, it goes to show his time has come on the back of standout songs like “junior.”
