While many artists today have the advantage of gaining traction through social media, German electro-indie duo Zimmer90 has found a way to take their lightning strike and experiment through a pop-friendly lens they’ve become known for. The duo, composed of longtime friends Joscha Becker and Finn Gronemeyer, has been keeping busy playing shows in the UK and Europe, while continuing to drop the most irresistible singles, ahead of the arrival of their debut album, Interior, out September 19. The duo will perform an album release show in Los Angeles on October 8 at The Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever.

When Zimmer90 were kids, recording music professionally became a goal early on for the brothers during their piano lessons. Realizing they wanted to learn beyond the piano, their teacher helped them record and produce their first songs. From there, they set their eyes on the indie-pop scene that quickly gained prominence during the aughts, taking after artists and bands like Daft Punk, AirPhoenix, and even the smooth 70s grooves of The Bee Gees.

However, in their own way, Zimmer90 is a way for Finn and Josch to capture moods through their music. The band name, Room90 in English, is a nod to how they focus on atmosphere as much as it does on crafting earworm singles engineered to get stuck in your head – which is exactly what happened with their independently released track “What Love Is” (2023). The infectious song took the reins of the #1 spot on Instagram with 1.9 million creations and 250K+ TikTok videos.

Placing them on the indie pop map of artists to watch, both Finn and Josch brought their best qualities to the table with “What Love Is,” ranging from the soft vocals to the glitzy synths. It’s a combination that the two realized was a tried and true formula they could use to approach subsequent material.

Wasting no time, the What Love Is EP soon followed the TikTok boost and landed them other standout songs in a fast-growing catalog. “Summer Rain” embraced the sunny atmosphere of its predecessor, taking on a relaxed pace that lets the brothers hypnotize listeners.

But recently, they’ve challenged themselves through collaborations with other artists and their recent slew of singles. On the duo’s feature for “Teacher” by Midnight Generation, they got to step out of their forte and try disco-inflicted electronica, a change of pace they made look easy based on the results.

“Learn To Let You Go” featuring New Zealand duo Balu Brigada similarly signaled another step up for Zimmer90 in a collaboration they described as the “new favourite international super group.” While their latest batch of delicious new songs; “Feel Myself,” “Wait For You,” and “Makes Me Wanna Dance,” have that velvety smooth Midas touch, which has become a sort of signature sound for Zimmer90. However, what’s most impressive is how their newest material, feature or not, still manages to maintain their imprint without sacrificing their voice.
