On the same day they performed in LA at El Rey Theatre, The Two Lips, formerly known as The Tulips, dropped their newest single, “clue,” out via Island Records. The LA-based duo, having changed their name to avoid confusion with a similarly named band (despite now having a similar band name to another local artist), show a different side of themselves after the infectious lead single, “talk.”
Fortunately, Andrea and Jewlz have done more than enough to distinguish themselves thanks to their ability to find catharsis within their pop-ready anthems, their songs able to stir up a good time and think through complicated social situations.
“‘clue’ is a song about the feeling when you have exhausted all options trying to save a relationship and you feel like you’ve reached a dead end,” both said. “Still, there’s hope that the ‘case’ can be cracked and the relationship is worth saving.”
Compared to “talk,” their new track finds the two dissecting their brand of bubblegum pop and indie rock to detail what it’s like being in a failing relationship. Lines like “Is everything I do thrown out the door?” encapsulate the feeling of being the only one who’s seemingly trying to make something work.
At the same time, “clue” doesn’t let itself fall into melancholic territory, maintaining the duo’s penchant for crafting catchy melodies over soft, lush instrumentation. Considering “talk” and “clue” come from two emotional spaces while still keeping The Two Lips’ trademark sounds, all signs point to a potentially big project on the way.
