Five years into their career, Texas four-piece Teethe is asking the hard questions in life on songs like “Iron Wine” off their new album, Magic Of The Sale, out via Winspear. The sophomore follow-up to their self-titled debut comes ahead of an LA show at Zebulon on Sept. 6.
In the spirit of fellow slowcore bands from the ‘90s such as Low and Duster, Teethe knows how to explore the deep inner recesses of longing through methodical pacing and downcast songwriting that’s just right for the atmospheres each member contributes to.
With Magic Of The Sale, they take it up a notch on all fronts by bringing in new collaborators, facing the void in their lyrics, and achieving crisp mixing that carries over the grungy quality of their instruments.
“Iron Wine” checks off all those boxes, relying on a slow pace that gives every sudden burst of intensity more punch. Within the first minute, the vocals, featuring an underwater-like quality, are contrasted by the buzzing of the guitar and bass that come in as though they were enacting vengeance for the relatively calm mood.
From there, the band knows how to let the song’s tone speak for itself, with the lyrics, which touch on the ruins of a one-sided relationship, adding to the atmosphere. Considering “Iron Wine” is just one of many tracks off the album that lets every member get their moment in the sun, it’s no wonder the band continues to evolve and garner more success in tandem.
