While the London-raised artist is best known for his brand of punk and rock, “Cry A Symphony” is a pivot in more ways than just its sentimental title.
The integration of 80s-esque synths and new wave sensibilities seamlessly melds with Deyaz’s already established sound, coming out on the other end as a merging of worlds that somehow collide like they were made for each other.
From the beginning, it’s clear Deyaz is mixing ingredients typically foreign to his music. The multi-instrumentalist finds a way to stir all the elements together, guided by his soft vocals uplifted by the retro electronic production that bursts to life through rock riffs and drums.
What ties the rest of “Cry A Symphony” together is how easy it is for the chorus to get stuck in your head, the “No I can’t / Give you all my sympathy” melody, in particular, acting like a sticker in the back of your mind after one listen.
Whether the new direction is a permanent change or Deyaz simply testing out the waters of a new sound, “Cry A Symphony” is an effortlessly done attempt at challenging listeners in what they’ve come to expect from you as an artist
