As one of the lead singles off his recently released debut album, noise (meaning), producer Monte Booker is proving why he’s one of the best artists to collaborate with on the Mereba-featuring track, “b2b.”
In the context of the album, “b2b” exemplifies how talented a producer Booker is, having worked on the project as a 50-song odyssey more reflective of his personal experiences than his sonic influences.
While noise (meaning) features frequent and expectedly standout collaborators like Smino, Booker gets the best out of Mereba atop a blaring instrumental that serves as a reminder of how singular his sound is in comparison to contemporaries.
Although Mereba’s voice is more commonly heard on softer production falling in the same ballpark as modern R&B, Booker pairs the vocalist with a booming bass and siren-like sounds better suited for an end-of-the-world warning.
And yet, the two make it work. The literal contrast between Mereba’s singing in between streams-of-consciousness verses and the adventurous production decisions helps distinguish the two artists from the rest of the pack. The aforementioned bass especially leaves a mark, slapping listeners in the face without coming off as overly disruptive – except in convention.
By the end of “b2b,” Booker and Mereba prove their teamwork is nothing short of brilliant, something they make look easy considering how such unorthodox decisions can contribute to the sort of music you can’t find anywhere else.
